If you happen to own one of the many purple martin house kits that is resident to this migratory bird then you know what a treat it is to see them.
Purple martin birds are swallows that migrate up from South America and then move upwards to North America. Although they resemble swallows they are larger than that. They have a unique perspective when they find their housing by tucking their wings in at great heights and generate a lot of speed. They are a sight to see if you're one of the lucky people that have a nesting area for them.
Early in the calendar year the male birds start scouting for residency areas. If you have been lucky enough to attract these birds then you can count on them coming back year after year.
The more that people can build housing for these birds the better off the bird population will be. In some places in North America these birds are totally dependent upon man made bird houses to hold them up. Without a place for these birds to nest eventually they would dwindle in population.
People building these houses for these birds are keeping the population alive and well and the payoff is insuring that the breed keeps with nature.
The location of the actual bird house has a lot to do with attracting these birds. Placing these bird houses in an open range away from tall trees is one of the attractions that they look for. It's because of the high diving aerial stunts that these birds love to do that makes houses in open areas fond to them.
These birds diet on flying insects and insuring that they are plentiful in the environment you intend to build will insure that they will visit your spot. Purple martins prey on flies, wasps, grasshoppers, beetles and a whole lot more in that arena. Not enough in the mosquito territory though but most any other small flying insects.
Once the location and environment has been identified then making sure that the actual purple martin house is properly set up is the next important step to take.
You can go to the trouble of making sure that you have the proper hole sizes and distance between the openings or you can purchase pre cut made purple martin house kits.
